Exhibition From London’s Victoria and Albert Museum Puts Contemporary Chinese Design Front And Center
"China Design Now" is an excellent introduction to the world of contemporary Chinese design and visual arts
Over the last 30 years — but mainly in the last 10 — Chinese contemporary design has roared to life, leading to unique and culturally resonant architecture and striking visual arts. Beginning this week, this vibrant design will be on full display at the Portland Art Museum‘s “China Design Now” exhibition in Portland, Oregon, giving visitors a glimpse of China’s rapidly shifting design industries while providing them a good cross-section of the tectonic cultural shifts that have awakened that country’s creative energy in the 21st century.

“China Design Now” will hurl visitors into the here and now of contemporary China, with all of its huge-scale cultural energy. The giant isn’t sleeping anymore. It’s wide awake and roaring. And “China Design Now” attempts to nail down the elusive contemporary moment of this restlessly moving target.

Hong Qi (Red Flag) Limousines Driven In National Day Parade Provoke Speculation Among China Car Watchers

This week, during China’s National Day parade, many viewers saw for the first time China’s first (and some would say only) luxury car brand — Hong Qi (Red Flag) — in action, carrying President Hu Jintao and Lieutenant General Fang Fenghui to Tian’anmen. For people unfamiliar with China’s exclusive home-grown luxury vehicle — generally reserved only for top leaders — what’s beneath the hood of Hong Qi’s newest model?

Information on the cars used in this years National Day celebrations is thin on the ground, we have learned that they measure 6.4 meters long, 2.05 meters wide and are 1.72 meters high, and with power being delivered by a V12 engine. The cars were considered state secrets during their development and were all hand made by First Automobile Workers in Changchun.

American Firm Callison, With More Than 1.4 Million Square Meters Of Space Under Construction, Sees Sustained Urban Growth

The Seattle-based architectural and retail design firm Callison announced today that it plans to leverage its nearly 20 years of experience in the Chinese market to direct more in-country staff and resources to its already-intensive China efforts. As we’ve written before, many observers think China’s future will depend on its second- and third-tier cities rather than the traditional business and cultural centers of Shanghai and Beijing, and Callison is looking to be one of the biggest players in the development of these large, but still underdeveloped, cities.
According to a company press release, the firm has put China high on its global list of priorities. The firm’s former CEO and current Principal, Bill Karst, is currently based in China, and the firm has more than 1.4 million square meters of space under construction, including The MIXc luxury shopping complex in Hangzhou and 24 City in Chengdu, both of which are being developed by China Resources. As the release goes on to point out, Callison is uniquely positioned in terms of major foreign architecture and design firms in China, as it has been in the market since 1991 — giving it rare insight into the workings and particularities of the Chinese market:

Beijing Designers Working Overtime To Make China’s Capital One Of The World’s Top Fashion Destinations
Fashion designers in Beijing are working hard to supplant Hong Kong and Shanghai as the country’s top fashion destination, with over 200 designers deeming their collections haute couture in the last decade alone. As Chinese designers become more focused on creating “China Style,” and less concerned about following Western trends, the push for a signature Chinese style will continue to create internal competition, causing the endogenous change necessary for a national style to emerge. As was the case in Japan and Korea, where domestic designers took decades to find their voice, China’s fashion designers need time as well as their innate competitiveness to develop a more global style, which can then become an influential force at fashion shows around the world.
